MEALS FOR UNEMPLOYED
PRESBYTERIAN SERVICE KITCHEN OPENS ON MONDAY Hot meals for the unemployed will be supplied by the Presbyterian Social Service Association from Monday next at the Manna House, Cook Street, which has been redesigned fcr that purpose. This will be the Presbyterian Church’s share in the relief of distress during the coming winter. The scheme will be under the control of Sister Esther, who will be assisted by the Rev. Thomas Halliday. general secretary to the association. He will have an office in the building, and will be present to help men with advice and employment. It is hoped eventually to obtain a central hall to establish a permanent city mission. The daily menus will include vegetable stews, mincemeat and curried sausages and rice. Potatoes, bread and butter will be served with every meal. Bread, vegetables and milk are to be supplied by several city firms at cost price, and even, in some cases, at below cost. Serving and assistance in the kitchen will be by the women of the Church. Through this move, the unemployed will be provided with meals as well as with beds. Hospital treatment has had. to be given to many because they had. been insufficiently nourished to withstand an illness, said Sister Esther. The Church was prepared to take its share in helping those in need of encouragement and in bodily want. A dedication service this evening will be attended by the Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour and Canon C. H. Grant Cowen.
