“CONDITIONS VERY BAD IN AUSTRALIA” MAGISTRATE SYMPATHETIC Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Three stowaways who came from Sydney' on the Waikouaiti were convicted and ordered to pay costs £ 7 10s each, in default one week’s gaol, in the Police Court today. One of the accused said that conditions were very bad in Australia. They had stowed away knowing the penalty, but believing that things could not be worse in New Zealand. He had had one week's work in a year, and single men could not get relief rations. Public were stopped everywhere. The magistrate said he had every sympathy with the men. who were apparently able-bodied and looking for work, but the law must be enforced. The police said that the number of stowaways coming from Australia was increasing, and presenting a serious problem.
