PERSONAL. —Mr. W. Peterson, chief engineer .of the Government lighthouse steamer Tutanekai, is to leave for London from Wellington by the Corinthic today to supervise the fitting of the engines into the new steamer which is being built at Home to replace the Tutanekai. The new vessel is not expected to arrive in New Zealand before October. NARBADA FROM THE EAST.— Cabled news has been received by the Union Steam Ship Company that its chartered steamer, Narbada, cleared Calcutta on Thursday last for Rangoon, Penaiw. Singapore, Samarang and Soura .ya, to complete loading Eastern merchandise for Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton and Dunedin. GOLDEN CROSS CLEARS LOS ANGELES. —CabIed news has been received by Henderson and Macfarlane, Ltd., that the O. and O- Company’s steamer Golden Cross cleared Los Angeles on April 1 with a cargo of general Pacific Slope for discharge at Auckland. Wellin Lvttelton. Timaru and Dunedin. She is due at this port on April 27.
TOFUA RETURNING.—The Union Company’s Island passenger steamer Tofua is scheduled to leave Suva at noon tomorrow for Auckland. The vessel should arrive here on Monday next. ACOSTA IN PORT.—The Shell Company's chartered tanker Acosta arrived this morning from Tarakau, Dutch East Indies, with a full cargo of bulk oil. About half of this will be discharged at Western Wharf. The vessel is scheduled to leave here tomorrow afternoon for Wellington to complete discharge. lONIC REACHED WELLINGTON. — The White Star liner lonic arrived at Wellington yesterday afternoon from London and Southampton. After landing her North Island passengers and mails, the vessel was to leave the capital at noon this day fox* Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff to unload her cargo of general merchandise. PAKEHA LOADING.—To complete her loading for Rotterdam and London, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Pakeha arrived in port this morning from Napier and berthed at Central Wharf. A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd., advises that the vessel ,is to be dispatched finally from here at 5 p.m. on Saturday on her Homeward voyage, via the Panama Canal. PORT HOBART LEAVES LAUNCESTON.—CabIed news has been received by the C. and D. Line that the motor-ship Port Hobart cleared Launceston at noon on Saturday for New Plymouth, where she is due today, to commence loading for New York, Boston, Halifax and London. She will subsequently load at Wanganui, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne and Auckland, is due here on April 28, and is lixed to sail finally from here on April CO. A RIVET LESS VESSEL. —The rivetless cargo vessel, a 2,500 ban*el oil tanker, was launched on February 14 from the shipbuilding yards of the Charleston Dry Dock and Machine Co. (America). The service test was to take place about the ed of February, aftei* which the steamer would go into service for the Texas Company. The vessel was constructed entirely by the arc-welding method, and has not a rivet, bolt, nor angle anywhere in its structure. The arc-welding was done under a new* system of dovetailed, lock-notched plaits, developed by Richard F. Smith, a young ship designer and inventor. One acetylene-cutting torch and one General Electric arc-welding machine were employed. Only nine workmen were required, and 8,000 pounds of welding wire were used as compared to 55.000 pounds of rivets, which would have been necessary, had the construction been by the riveting method. The vessel is 120 ft in length and 23ft in width, and has a 10ft draught. VERY FAST MOTOR-SHIP.-Akers mek. Verksted have recently launched the Diesel motor-vessel Dagfred to the shipping Company Ocean. Managing owners, Messrs. John P. Pedersen and Son, of Oslo. The vessel, which is of 8,200 tons, has the following dimensions: 402 ft by 54ft Gin by 37ft. The vessel is of a special type, particularly fitted for the carriage of large deck cargoes, especially lumber, and it is the intention to put the vessel into the recently announced service which will now be started by the Ocean Company in conjunction with H M. Wrangell and Co., A/S, of Haugesund, running between North Pacific ports and Austi-alia. The engine of the Dagfred consists of two six-c ylindered single-acting B. and W. type Diesel motors of Messrs. Akers’s own construction, and they indicate a total of 4,000 lx.p. at 145 revolutions a minute. The vessel attained a speed of knots on her trial trip. The keel was laid on May 22 last year, and she was launched on November 9, and was thus delivered in less than nine xnotnhs. THE OTOKIA. —The Union Company has received a further wireless message from the tanker Otokia, en route from San Pedro to AVellington, reporting that she now expects to arrive there tomorrow. THE PORT CAROLINE. —Heather, Roberton. Ltd., advise that the Commonwealth and Dominion Line vessel Port Caroline, which had been' completing her loading for London at Queen’s AVharf, was to be dispatched for that port via the Panama Canal at noon today. ELVERIC AT CHELSEA. —Advice received from Spedding, Ltd., states that the Bank Line steamer Elveric, now at Chelsea Wharf unloading a full cargo of raw sugar from Cuba, is to sail on April 16, but no destination has yet been announced for the vessel. TAHITI IN A GALE.— Early on Alonday morning the Union liner Tahiti arrived in the stream at Wellington from San Fiancisco, via Papeete and Raratonga. She experiened fine weather until near Rarotonga, when a heavy swell with high winds and rough seas was encountered, and the vessel was forced to remain off the Island for four hours befoi*e she could anchor. The Tahiti left Rarotonga again at 1.25 a.m. on April 1. and the following day ran into a full gale, with a heavy cross sea. Next day the weather moderated slightly, but rough seas were encountered until she neared AVellington. THE CANON ESA. —To replenish her bunkers, the Furness Houlder steamer Canonesa arrived at Wellington on Monday morning from London. The vessel left London on February 23, and experienced fair weather unjfil Alarch 30. when she ran into a very heavy south-westerlv swell. Stormy conditions prevailed until April 3, the seas at times running unusually high, the vessel, which is in ballast, pitching and rolling badlv. Captain W. H. Brodie is in command of the Canonesa, whi, f left again on Alonday night for Point. Tasmania, to load apples for England and the Continent. MAKURA’S PASSENGERS.— The Union Company intercolonial passenger liner Makura arrived in port early this morning from S\*dney, and after pratique had been granted berthed at Queen’s AVharf to land mails, cargo and the following passengers:—
