ON A ROMAN WALL

On the foundations of some Roman houses built in the second century some of the early Christians built one of their first churches, that of St. Sebastian in the famous Appian Way along which Paul walked to Rome. It has now been excavated, and many interesting discoveries have rewarded the excavators. One of the more curious relics is the obituary of an actor, a very well-graced person in that day, who took parts of old men and women, and of whom his memorial tablet says that he was so fond of acting that it was a wonder he did not die on the stage. But odder than this is something that was scratched on the walls of a Roman house over which the church was built. It is a sketch, evidently done by children, of a fight between gladiators. That is the sort of incident which appeals to boys of all times, Roman and Christian, and something like it is doubtless being scratched on walls today.
