CHAMPIONS TRAIN
NIGHTMARCH. CHIDE AND AMOUNIS | ON RANDWICK TRACKS —— With ideal track conditions offering, j j the champions were seen to advantage t at Randwick yesterday, says a Sydney c writer of April 2. just prior to Night- -j march's easy defeat of Chide, in their • ] preparation for the great autumn prizes. The three outstanding rivals for : Raws on Stakes honours at Rosehill on i Saturday, Night march, Amounis, and t Chide wdre at their best, and Night- ( march was responsible for an except: tonal effort over 7 furlongs. Chide’s gallop was made a vigorous one in view of his Rawson Stakes j engagement. Connections were anxi- j ous to know whether lie is tit to con- j test that mile and a furlong weight-for- j age engagement. Thev had every reason to be satis- | tied with his effort. He ran 7 furlongs ;in 1.31, and although the time wasn’t las fast as Nightmarch’s, the fact that j he defeated Anambah, a smart gal- | loper, by four lengths, indicated the j merit of the, performance. Chide may not be equal to seri- j ously extending Amounis or Night- ! march on Saturday, for while they have raced, arid are in forward condition, he has yet to begin his autumn campaign. But the effort shows that he is ready j to go on with the racing and work j that will thoroughly fit him for his \ Sydney Cup weight-for-age engage- j ments at the Randwick autumn meet- | Nightmarch ran his seven furlongs j in 1.29 J, and the fact that his figures beat the next best by nearly two seconds, indicates the speed at which ne travelled. He ran the last six furlongs in 1.17. i it is the best gallop he has achieved so far this autumn, and is a definite answer to critics who had been wnispering that all might not be well win the champion. It showed that although beaten at Moorefield bis race in the Hawkesbury Handicap has :ad a beneficial influence on hie racing condition. . „ Phar Lap is not engaged in fcatuiday’s Rawson Stakes, and having had four races in Melbourne, he is jnot inquired to hurry in his von unt. nearer the big racing at Randwick. Consequently he did only an eas_mile and a-quarter in 2.19-1. traversing the last five furlongs m 1.7. Amounis, who holds his condition on remarkably light work, sprinted onlj half a mile, but he did it with o reat freedom in oil.
