PARRISH BELLE AGAIN HAWKE’S BAY MEETING Special to THE SUE HASTINGS, Saturday. The Hawke’s Bay trotting carnival i was launched successfully today in dull I but line weather. There was a large j attendance and the track was in good I order. The machine handled £8,777, against £7,630 for seven races on the* first day of the June fixture. Inverness was made a better fav- ! ourite than for the Novice Handicap, with Golden Oaks and High- ! land Derby well supported. The favourite, driven by the owner, quickly hit the front, leading past the stand from Highland Derby, Atholrey. Rangihau and Rector, and along the back ■ Rangihau moved up behind Highland ! Derby, who was close to Inverness, this pair coning into the straight in close , order. One hundred yards from the) post Highland Derby headed Inverness, but Rangihau got up at the finish to win by half a length, with Inverness three lengths back. Golden Oaks, who met with interference, was next, followed by Muriel Thorpe. Havelock Handicap Five withdrawals from the Havelock Handicap left a small field for backers to make investment. Parrish Belle was a good favourite over Pilot, carrying £537. Ockley Wood began quickest, but breaking in the straight C. Lee ran to the front with the favourite, and the filly, trotting like a little champion, never gave backers any cause for uneasiness, eventually winning pulling up by a couple of lengths. Ockley Wood and King Peter, between breaking intervals, exchanged places for second, but in the final run Berkett’s charge secured second honours. The-winner was the only real trotter in the race. Despite a bad showing at Ashhhurst Bingen Spiers was elected favourite for the Napier Handicap from Bonnie - wall and Sister Chris. Mr. Corrigan’s pacer went away correctly, and making no mistakes held his advanag© all the way to win nicely by two lengths. Hardiness, who refused to leave the mark at Ashhurst, also began right, and trailed the favourite all the way. Bonniewah was slow in the early stages, losing a lot of ground, but over the last half mile made up territory to finish a similar distance away third. Good Lady, badly left, was going well in the concluding stages. Hawke’s Bay Cup Little Guy and Sister Chris were the only defaulters from the Hawke's Bay Cup, for which Lady Author was i slightly better favourite than the local-owned All Red. When Arachne began well and hit the front quickly, backers expected to see her repeat last year’s performance, but J. Shaw’s representative just failed at a vital point. She was attended early by Gumdigger, Sir Guy, All Red and Pavlova, and there was little change half a mile from home, where Gang Awa, who lost a lot of good ground at the start, was moving up handy. Arachne was still in the van at the home turn, with Sir Guy and All Red in hot pursuit, and Gumdigger and Gang Awa also in the picture. Half-way up the straight Sir Guy and All Red challenged Arachne, and in a punishing finish Lloyd’s horse scored a popular victory by a narrow margin over Sir Guy, with Arachne a head away third. Mountain Princess was fourth, followed by Gang Awa. The Hastings Handicap was a bare two-dividend race. Highland Derby was a solid favourite, Roland having the most support of the remainder. The favourite was a bit slow, Victor Kyle leading out, but at the stands A. Bryce took Highland Derby to the front, and pacing freely never caused backers uneasiness, strolling home easily by four lengths. Fliton began well and soon was in second place, but tired in the straight.' Victor Kyle headed the local horse, but the driver, easing up, Friton came again to capture the minor dividend place. Capilan, a useful looking maiden, was fourth. Roland would not handle the grass track too well. Stewards Trot Rosie Nelson carried nearly all the investments in the Stewards Trot, which saw only four starters. Parrish Belle, penalised 48yds for a previous win, was withdrawn. Pilot was the early leader, but Rosie Nelson settled to business at the end of six furlongs, and going to the front she trotted steadily well clear of Pilot all the way to win by four lengths. Brian Bingen faded out half a mile from home and got a poor third, with Nelson Parrish down the straight well back. St. George was elected favourite for the March Handicap, but there was good money for Little Guy, only a couple of pounds separating them at closing time. Little Guy began in good style, followed by Zealous, while St. George was slow to move. Along the back Ngahuia moved up fast into third place, but Little Guy and Zealous wero well clear at the home turn, with St. George making up leeway. In the run home Little Guy gave nothing a chance, winning easily by two lengths from Zealous, who hung on to beat the fast-finishing Kevin Brae by a length, with St. Geox'ge in line, and Wakefield and Ngahuia further back. Karamu Handicap Pavlova was better backed than Peter Lloyd in the Karamu Handicap, with good support for Richore. Peter Lloyd and Fliton went away in front and at the end of half a mile were together, leading Pavlova and Gumdigger. The latter broke and the favourite went after the leaders. Peter Lloyd was slightly in advance of Fliton at the bend, with Pavlova handy, and in a good finish Fisken’s charge won by half a length from the outsider, Fliton, who beat Pavlova by the narrowest margins. Richore was next to finish. Additional results are: Havelock Handicap. of £120; limit o.oO; 1| miles.—l Parrish Belle, 12vds C. <l.
