JhL A RD WORDS, a smart youngster, led the field in the Hobson Handicap round the home turn at Takapuna on Saturday. A woman, standing inside the rails right at the turn into the straight, so excited at the prospect of her horse winning (it must have been Hard Words), promptly opened her umbrella and waved it aloft. The result was that Hard Words ran wide, and in running out he bumped Bells of Shandon hard, and Full Measure, farther out, also got one from Bells of Shandon. It was an unfortunate affair, and although Hard Words would have taken some beating as it was, the backers of Bells of Shandon and Full Measure had their winning chances ruined. In future it would be advisable to rope off the area inside the rails on the home bend. Incidents such as Saturday’s might have led to a
