“ESCAPOLOGY”

THE QUIET CORNER

Written for THE SUN by the Rev. Charles Chandler J7ic , late Han't) Houdini was referred to by Mr. Justice iidduiytoti, of Sydney, in his book entitled “Worshipful ‘thinfl’ if,i U e ' S ' capo/ T He Kas a oenius at getting out of things. Milk cans, packing cases, strait-jackets, and prison vans were all the same to him. To some extent tec are all escapologists. We are for ever seeking a way of escape. Born to be free, yet bound with chains. Chains of fear —afraid of ourselves and of convention; of other people’s opinions and of our own judgment. He who has escaped from these prison houses has travelled a long way on the road to complete realisation. Religion itself, to the primitive mind, was a way of escape from the flames of hell, just as soma juice provides a means of escape from the grim reality of a haunting consciousness. Jesus often times went apart into a mountain to pray. It was to Him a way of escape from the surging crowd which pressed upon Him like the sea. It would be well that we should all study some phase of the very profound science of cscapology. Our own entry into this world was in its way, an escape, and it is commonly believed that death provides another not less painful means of escape, into a larger and fuller life; a life wherin the spirit, free from all that bound it to the earth, shall with that larger freedom brave a yet more high adventure. NEXT WEEK: HIGGLEDY PIGGLEDY.
