Pleasure at the general appearance of the Ruakura State Farm was expressed by Dr. C. J. Reakes, DirectorGeneral of Agriculture, who visited Hamilton yesterday. He thought both animals and pastures were in excellent condition. while he was struck with the abundance of feed, at present typical of the Waikato. He mentioned that the list of entrants to the boys’ training school was now full. Dr. Reakes left for Rotorua in the afternoon to investigate bush sick - ■ ness, and to make arrangements 'or j the work the department has coip- ! menced with a view to preparing a j largo area of pumice land for sett’e- ; ment. • * * j The new system of rubbish collec!t on for the Hamilton borough will | com© into operation next week. In j tie past, the work has been done by j private contractors and there has been i considerable overlapping. The new ] method provides for one contractor I covering the whole town. A levy of j 15s will be made annually on all owners of residential properties. • ♦ a | Over 250 members of the First 1 Battalion Waikato Regiment entered into the Hopuhopu camp today for a. week’s training. The new comtnanj dant, Lieutenant-Colonel R. D. McFarland. will be in command. Major R. F. Ward will be second in command and Lieutenant J. W. Barry wjli j act as adjutant. During the last three days officers anc. X.C.O.’s of the i unit have been undergoing a. refresher course. Trainees are drawn from the Hamilton. Taumarunui, Tauranga and Otahuliu districts. * • » The Hon W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, is expected to visit Hamilton in connection with the proposed deviation of the railway line ie „ about six. weeks time.
