For instance, heavy furniture needs a good substantial carpet under it; light and delicate Eastern carpets, though most attractive for drawing rooms and lvoudoirs, become easily soiled and are [not recommended for hard wear. Patterned carpets, again. do not show marks nearly so quickly as self colours, and are best for dining rooms. Seamless Axminsters and Wilton , squares are excellent wearing carpets ifor living rooms. . I A carpet should not dominate a room. Many people have a way of choosing carpets which please them without considering lighting effects or furniture, and frequently one meets with a. carpet that has the centre hidden away under a huge dining room table. Always buy the best carpets which can be afforded as it pays in the long ‘ run. and be careful to deal with reliablelflrms. It is not wise to purchase» Second-hand carpets unless something is known about them. In buying stair carpeting purchase a little extra, as all stair carpets should be shifted annually about oneeighth of a. yard to prevent wear on the treads. All carpets should be laid ‘by experts if they are to he tacked down. On the other hand. art squares, etc, }can be laid quite easily, by the house!wlfe. In this case, it is best to avoid Hacks. SWEET . ; _._ j ingredients; Four eggs, two good i tablespoousful sugar, two tablespoons}t‘ul flour, half a. lemon, 3. little jam. {one (or two) bars plain chocolate. 1 Separate the yolks of the eggs from the whites. Beat the yolks and the sugar well together. then mix in the {flour gradually till smooth. Grate in lthe peel of the lemon, squeeze out the juice, strain it, add this. and mix iagain. Beat up the egg whites to a stiff froth and mix in lightly. The {mixture should be of the consistency of cream. Butter a pan and pour in the mixture—the pan must be large enough - to allow it to spread into a fairly thin layer. Put into a slow oven and leave to set. Soak a clean table napkin in cold water, and spread it ~ out flat. Turn the egg cake on to the napkin and spread with jam. ’ Take up the cloth by the front lends and, lifting these higher and ; higher, roll up 'the cake with the jam iinsidc. Set the roll on a. long plate. Melt the chocolate with a little water i and spread it all over the roll. Serve {cold in small slices.
