RECORD RAIN FIGURES IN JANUARY FOURTEEN WET DAYS Extraordinarily heavy rain, described by the Government observer. Mr. H. M. Vincent, in his review as a succession of tropical downpours, easily established a record for January in Auckland. During the month, 5.4 inches of rain fell—more than 5.5 inches above the average rainfall in January and the heaviest fall recorded in 46 years. The previous record was 7.45 inches, in 1907. On January 21 there were 1.74 inches of rain. Rain fell on 14 days, making an average of 60 points a day. The fall on January 21 was the heaviest experienced in Auckland for several years. Bright sunshine was below the average and temperatures were cooler thau usual. Westerly winds prevailed and thunder was heard on four days. Two days were recorded without sunshine, of which there was a total of 209 hours 5 minutes. The maximum. 13 hours 10 minutes, was on January 23. Rainfall in the past month was more than 7 inches higher than that of January last year, when there were 1.38 inches. In 1928, .20 inches fell, and in 1927, 1.46 inches. The mean barometer reading for the month was 29.893 inches, the highest reading, on January 7, was 30.199, and the lowest, on January 15, 29.435. On the hottest day, January 27, the therirtometer registered 7Sdeg. in the shade. On January 15 the temperature was as low as 53deg.
