LEO CARILLO’S SUCCESS COMING Auckland playgoers will doubtless be delighted to know that on Wednesday, February 12, and six following evenings, the J. C. Williamson, Ltd., management will present for the first time here the world renowned star, Mr. Leo Carrillo, in the famous comedy “Lombardi, Ltd.’* “Lombardi, Ltd.,’* broke all known records during its six months’ run in Sydney and created a furore of enthusiasm in Wellington recently. Leo Carrillo was born in the old Spanish Quarter of Los Angeles, and, of course, all his early associations were with California. He made his first appearance on the sta.ge at the Orpheum, without any make-up and in his every-day clothes. lie gave imitations of the distinguished people he had met during his career as a reporter and he scored an instantaneous success. After his first appearance he was booked up for vaudeville, and he has been on the stage ever since. His repertoire is a very long one, but by far his outstanding triumphs have been achieved as Tito Lombardi, a character he has been playing for many years His bright and virile personality never fails to make a deep impression on his audience, and his name is a household word among theatregoers in England and America. In his impersonation of the proprietor of a fashionable dressmaking establishment Leo Carrillo has brought “stormy weather” to many theatres—gales of laughter which have swept through huge audiences from gallery to circle. Mr. Carrillo is supported by an exceptionally brilliant. company of comedy and dramatic artists. Two actresses who will make their first appearance here are Miss Margaret Cullen-Landis, who plays the part of Eloise, the pocket-Venus model, upon whom the great Tito builds some of his wonderful dress creations, and Barbara Luddy, the charming 18-year-old comedy actress, who appears as Daisy, the “wise crackling, gum-chew-ing mannequin,** who is responsible for much of the comedy in “Lombardi, Ltd.” Altogether there are 40 people concerned in the production of “Lombardi, Ltd.” The box plans will be opened at Eadys, Limited, on Monday, February 10. PRINCE EDWARD “Blockade,” the exciting talking film now being presented at the Prince Edward Theatre, is a story centering round the conflict between the American “bootleggers” and customs officials. v The star is the beautiful actress Anna Q. Nilsson, and the whole of the thrilling action takes place at sea off the east of Florida and in Havana. A full programme of talking and singing featurettes is also being presented.
