FAST TIMES PROMISED

WORLD RECORD HOLDER AT WESTERN SPRINGS PROGRAMME FOR TONIGHT With Frank Pearce, holder of a world record on the quarter-mile cinder track, competing against “Skid” Perkins and Jimmy Datson, two Australians who have previously delighted Auckland audiences at Western Springs, the events at this stadium this evening should provide the best entertainment and the biggest thrills of any programme since racing began here. The speedy record-holder is back on the scratch mark, the other two from across the Tasman each being given one second handicap. When it is remembered that these men have previously put up remarkable performances in Auckland and that Perkins is at present holder of the Christchurch track record of lm 30s. some idea of Pearce’s speed may be gained. An innovation which should meet with the approval of spectators will be the running of the three heats of the Improvers’ Handicap in between senior events. This will give riders an opportunity to rest between races and to give of their best in the various events. Mattson and Bray, Auckland’s fastest cinder shifters, are being given only two seconds handicap on Perkins and Datson, and will have to go fast to be placed. Other handicaps are almost unchanged.
