BAIL REFUSED

WOMAN FACES SERIOUS CHARGE CONDITION OF GIRL Arrested yesterday morning by Detective Knight and ActingDetective Davis, Maud Herbert, a married woman, aged. 41. was remanded at the Police Court this morning until Monday, on a charge of using an instrument. Bail was refused. Herbert, who lives at Dominion Read Terminus, was represented byMr. Allan Moody. The offence was alleged to have been committed on December 22. Counsel asked for bail. “I don’t know whether the police will raise any objection,” he said. “I shall, if they don’t,” countered Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., refusing the application. Chief-Detective Hammond based his objection to the granting of bail on the condition of the girl, who is understood to be seriously ill in the Auckland Hospital.
