LATE SHOPPING NIGHT
TRAMS IN QUEEN STREET THIS EVENING NEW YEAR’S EVE PLANS Late shopping night in Auckland will be observed this evening, New Year’s Eve, which will offer the public the last opportunity to buy before the business houses close for two days’ holiday. The retail firms will re-open on Friday morning, but no late night will be observed that evening. The half-holiday on Saturday will be observed as usual. The banks will close today and resume business on Friday morning. This evening trams will run in Queen Street as usual. They have not before been excluded and the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said this morning the Transport Board had never contemplated repeating the ban operating on Christmas Eve. A large number of sports attractions have been arranged for the the holidays. Today the trotting meeting will conclude at Alexandra Park. The principal fixtures tomorrow include races at Ellerslie, motor-cycle racing at Western Springs Stadium, regattas at Whangarei and Cowes Bay, and sports at Tapu, Mauku and 'Waipu. On Thursday the gallops at Ellerslie will conclude, and there will be motor-cycle racing at Western Springs Stadium, and a similar meeting will be held on Friday. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Canterbury is to start at Eden Park on January 2 and is set down for the three succeeding days. The Auckland swimming championships will be decided at the Tepid Baths on January 9.
