MOTOR-PACED CYCLING
BIG CARNIVAL TONIGHT MANUKAU CLUBS MEETING The cycle racing carnival to be conducted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club at the banked concrete cycle track at the Western Springs Stadium this evening will be a big event in the history of cycle racing in Auckland. It will mark the official opening of the new track, which undoubtedly ranks with the best of its kind in the Dominion. The Manukau Club will bo introducing motor-paced racing to the Auckland public, when the 17-yeav-old flyer. Angus Mackie, Canterbury' > three-mile amateur sprint champion, will be matched against Auckland’s popular lli-year-old champion, .lack Wade, who has- many excellent performances to his credit on both track and road. Wade is the present halfmile sprint champion of Xew Zealand. When two such well-known riders get “behind the rollers.” a keen con- ! test is assured. Mackie is naturally I favoured, for he lias had previous e\ ! perience at actual racing, but Wa.lo : in training adapted himself to the new : phase of the sport so quickly that no j surprise will be occasioned his fol- ' lowers should he head oft such a splen--1 did performer as Mackie. On Saturday evening both riders gave a solo exhibition behind on«> of the motor-cycles before the gathering at the dirt track meeting. Each lapped in the region of 3S miles an hour. Tonight both riders will be on the track at the one time and are confidently expected to lap at more than 40 miles an hour. In training last week Mackie covered several laps :»t over the last-mentioned speed. His best lap took 24 seconds (44.2 miles an hour). TO BEAT OPPERMAN? Besides the actual race, Angus Mackio will attempt to lower the present recognised Xew Zealand motor-paced record for five miles, which is at present held by Hubert Opperman, Australia’s wonder cyclist. The final event on the programme promises to be the best race of the evening. Thirty-two have actually nominated. Auckland riders have been training hard for this race, but whoever wins will find in Hamilton’s champion amateur rider. F. C. Honwood, a very diftic.ult proposition. Kenwood has been training on the track during the holidays. H. R. Dwight, fresh from five firsts out of live starts at Dunedin during the present month will also put up a good ride, while A. Mackie and J. H. Wade are every bit as eager to make good even though they will have plenty of racing during the earlier part of the evening. The amateurs will be riding under the rules of the Xew Zealand Union of (amateur) Cyclists, while the professionals will be riding to the rules of the Xorthern Athletic Union, which body .controls professional sport in the Auckland Province. Summed up. the meeting should be the finest cycle race meet ever staged in Auckland. Actu- • ally 77 riders will he competing.
