The Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Wellington was begun on the Basin Reserve yesterday in fine weather. Wellington won the toss, and batted first on an excellent wicket. The innings was declared closed at the tea adjournment with the total at 366 runs for nine wickets. Dempster gave a fine display for 141 not out. When stumps were drawn for the day, Canterbury had scored 142 for the loss of five wickets. Lowry and Dempster were the opening batsmen. Dempster ha'd to retire for a time as the result of being struck by a ball from Simmonds, but he and Badcock were not troubled by the bowling. Tiie fielding of Canterbury left much to be desired, Merritt suffering particularly from dropped catches. Badcock scored very fast, and Dempster was smarter than usual. Lowry had one or two lives before lie was caught behind the wickets. Mackenzie was run out through the failure of Dempster to respond to a call. This was unfortunate, as Mackenzie appeared to be well set, and was scoring very rapidly. When lie was 10, McGirr gave Harris in the slips a chance, which was missed. However, the wicketkeeper made no mistake when his chance came a run later. FINE PARTNERSHIP When Badcock joined Dempster, runs came at a merry pace, and the partnership realised 100 runs in 45 minutes. Two hundred runs came up after two hours and 20 minutes’ play, and fours were frequent, in spite of rapid changes of bowling. Burns missed a good chance of stumping tSadcock when in the forties. Bad-, cock hit Talbot over the pavilion for six. Before he was 60 Badcock was dropped in the long field off Merritt. When Badcock was ultimately caught by Page off Merritt, with his score at 78, his partnership had put on 134 in 5S minutes. He had hit 14 fours and a six. Dempster reached his century in 125 minutes, his first in Plunket Shield matches. He, was making shots all round tire wicket. Lowry declared at the tea adjournment with nine wickets down for 366, leaving Dempster unbeaten for 141. CANTERBURY'S INNINGS Cromb and Allen opened the batting for the visitors to the bowling of McGirr (north end) and Badcock. Allen was clean-bowled by Badcock after getting two. Roberts joined Cromb, and the score was taken to 24 before Hope relieved Badcock and Henderson replaced McGirr. In the latter’s second over Cromb gave a chance, but it was declined. Play was quiet, with the two fast bowlers operating,- but Roberts relieved the monotony somewhat by getting an off-drive off Hope through to the fence. At 4.45 p.m. the score was '33 for one wicket, Cromb 19 and Roberts 9. Forty-three showed when Lambert took over from Hope, and the score was 66 when Badcock went on in place of Lambert. Cromb immediately sent a, ball to McGirr at mid-off. 66—2—25. Page was the next man in. The century was hoisted just before 5.30 p.m., and McGirr, who relieved Hope, had Page caught at cover. 102 —3—17. Roberts had just reached 50. At stumps the score was 142 for five wickets, Talbot 20, and Tester 8, being not out.
