FATAL CLASH IN HAITI
NATIVES KILLED IN FIGHT WITH MARINES REINFORCEMENTS ORDERED NEW YORK, Sunday. A message from Port-au-Prince says the apparently calm situation throughout Haiti was dramatically shattered late yesterday, when 1,500 Haitians clashed with the American marine patrol on the outskirts o£ the city of Auxcayes. In the encounter five Haitians were killed and 20 wounded. One marine was slightly injured. Auxcayes is quiet today, but a further invasion is feared, and the local magistrates dread looting, because of the old enmity between the city residents and the peasants. Also a.t Jacmel trouble was observed when widespread smuggling of arms from Guatemala was exposed, and mobs cut the communication wires and threatened the residents. President Hoover has ordered the despatch of 500 marines to Haiti, upon being confronted with open violence. The President has also requested Congress for its authorisation, and for an appropriation of £IO,OOO to send a commission without delay to Haiti, for reconsideration of American policy there. In a special message to Congress Mr. Hoover says: “Our experience has revealed more clearly than was first seen the difficulties of the problem.”
