NOTED SOLDIER DEAD
SIR CHARLES C. MONRO, OF GALLIPOLI FAME LONDON, Saturday, v death has occurred of General Sir Charles Monro, aged 69. General Sir Charles Carmichael Monro was horn in IS6O and entered the Army in 1879. He saw service on the IndiaD frontier, in South Africa, and in the recent war commanded the Third Army, 1915, and was Commander-in-chief at the Dardanelles, and later commanded the First Army in France for a time. 1 rum 1916 to 1920 he was CommantlerIn India, and Commander-in-vttief at Gibraltar from 1923 to 1925, nen teas succeeded by Sir Alexnder Godley. He retired on SepIS, 1928, having attained the iti ° r ColQ P u lscry retirement. 1 name became famous in conV . n with the withdrawal of the >ttsh forces from the Dardanelles.
