RYAN AS SURFER
UNPLACED AT HELENSVILLE Special to THE SUN HELENSVILLE, Sunday. A splendid exhibition of surfing was given this afternoon at Muriwai Beach by Noel Ryan, the Australian distance swimming champion. As a member of the Manly Club, Sydney, Ryan takes a prominent part in the sport. A large crowd watched his performance. At the Helensville Swimming Club’s carnival last evening Ryan was heavily handicapped in the 200 yards event, and was unplaced. The other Sydney swimmer, Owen Griffiths, won the 100 yards scratch race. Ryan lias not yet won on his tour, but Griffiths has won three times, and lost once. They swim at Paeroa today. WATER POLO GAMES Matches in the second round of the Auckland Water Polo Control Board’s competition begin at 7.15 o’clock this evening in the Tepid Baths. Mount Eden’s strengthened side will play H.M.S. Philomel, North Shore meets University,, and Parnell is matched with Waitemata B. At Parnell Club’s carnival tomorrow evening Waitemata A will play Ponsonby B. Grammar and Ponsonby A will play at a date to be fixed. *
