PRICES STEADY

N.Z. STOCK MARKETS

MOVEMENTS REVIEWED By R.W.C. The supply of lambs offering for export throughout the North Island has increased considerably over the past week, and some works are

operating not far short of capacity. At the Westfield works up to 3,000 lambs a day are now coming forward, with every indication tliat these figures will increase over the next week or so. Export prices remain unchanged. In Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay payers are busy in all parts, and offerings at the various works are reported to be quite satisfactory for this time of the year. Although it may be held in some quarters that higher prices will rule as the season advances, there is little in either the home or overseas position to indicate such a trend. At the moment the tendency is for prices in the various stock selling centres throughout the Dominion to drop to export parity; the lower prices tor wool are also causing store buyers to operate with considerably more caution. In tho Westfield yards yesterday an offering of approximately 430 lambs met with a steady demand at a little above exporters’ limits. Westfield’s offering of approximately 650 head of fat cattle yesterday was made up largely of medium-framed cattle, a bigger percentage than usual of which showed a noticeable lack of finish. There were no extra heavy prime cattle in the yard. There was a steady demand at late rates for all well-finished lines, best ox making up to 425; best cow and heifer beef made to 395.

Calves met with a better demand, choice quality handy weight vealers being keenly sought after. There were no particularly heavy prime lines of fat sheep forward, the offering in this section being made up mostly of medium weight wethers. The market held steady at late rates. It was noticeable yesterday that there were one or two farmers in the market for any line of ewes which would stand another lambing season. Fat pigs met with a very firm demand, good baconers making up to £ 4 4s; porkers sold at an average price of from Gd to 7d a lb dressed weight. Stores met with a steady sale, although there has been a falling off in the demand over the past few weeks. Large storoH made to £2 6s.

Stortford Lodge Market At tho Stortford Lodge (Hawke’s Bay) market yesterday there was an average yarding in most sections. Both l store and fat sheep sold at slightly better prices. Johnsonville Market Steady In the Johnsonville (Wellington) yards yesterday beef met with a steady demand at late rates. Values for wethers were unchanged, but ewes were dull of sale, prices showing a reduction of Is a head on late rates. Good lambs sold freely, inferior sorts being hard to quit. Extra heavy bullocks, £l6 15s to £l7 2s 6d; heavy bullocks, £ls 7s Gd to £l6 10s; extra heavy cows, £l3; heavy cows, £ll 7s 6d to £ll 15s; medium cows, £9; runners, £5 15s to £6 2s Gd; vealers, £1 9s to £2 4s; heavy shorn wethers, 27s 3d to 27s 6d; medium shorn wethers, 26s to 26s 6d: heavy shorn ewes, 20s to 21s; medium shorn ewes, ISs to 19s 2d; lambs, 19s to 245.
