NOT TOO OLD
Dear Miss Rutledge,— May I avail myself of your courteous a<lviee? I am an Englishwoman, widow of a professional man, resident about 20 years in New Zealand and left quite unprovided for. I have sonne household necessities, no furniture. lam 62 years of age, my health is good. Am- I beyond the pale of employment on account of my age? I am considered a good cook and housekeeper, and wondered if I could find employment in a club for women? LONESOME. ANSWER If you .are strong and enjoy robust health, there is reason to be optimistic about your age, and it should not be very difficult for you to find suitable employment. Altlnough wages are essential in your case, thiey are not as important as a good home and the necessary little comforts provided in a home. With these facts iit mind, I suggest that it would be much more satisfactory for you to try to secure a position as companionhousekeeper in a nice household. Work in a women’s club might be congenial, but, as most of these are only to be found in large centres, in limited numbers, it might be some time before you are suited, wherears companion-helps and housekeepers are usually in demand. Make your want known among your friends, and watch the newspaper columns. ANNE RUTLEDGE.
