A GREAT STAYER
CHIDE and nightmarch late OWNER’S COMMENT
Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. C hide leaves for Rand wick on Thurs- I Hay. The 6,000 guineas was the second offer for Chide in the last two months. prior to his Riccarton successes the horse's former owner. Mr. G. Murray was made an offer of 3,000 guineas for the Paladin gelding, but the value placed upon Chide’s future career was clearly indicated by a refusal to sell at that sum. Chide s new owner, Mr. T. C. Traut*ein, is not unknown to New Zealanders. Four years ago he purchased, the New Zealand Derby winner. Runnyjnedc. at a large figure, but the horse was a rank disappointment and resulted in a big financial loss for his owner. But Mr. Trautwein is a wealthy tnan- He is a well-known publican of {Sydney, and among his turf successes the A.J.C. Metropolitan, which he Won in 1916 with Quinologist. Chide has been described as the wonder horse of the season. In a space o£ a few months he aspired to great heights, and, following on his triumphant successes at the New Zealand Cup carnival, ho earned the reputation being ono of the best four-year-elds of his time. While discussing the sale of his horse this morning, Mr. Murray Aynsley said he had had some great horses through his hands during his lengthy association with the turf, but Chide was one pf the best ho ever trained, and compared with Bonny Glen and Warstep. The Business Viewpoint tally I am sorry to part with jilni, n© said. “Besides racing and training Chide, I also bred him, but it would take at least two years to win 6,000 guineas with him in New Zeajhml, even allowing for success in the jnost important events. Moreover, he is a gelding, and if anything should happen to him so as to restrict his career on the turf he would be worthless.” When asked his opinion as to how Chide would have fared with Nightjnarcli in a proposed weight-for-age {natch at Riccarton next February, Mr. Aynsley replied: Mot Afraid of Nightmarch ■‘l was not the least bit scared of fsightmarch, but it is hard to compare both horses, as they haven’t met since they were youngsters.” Chide concluded his racing in the Dominion with an honour that did not befall the greatest of our turf celebrities. He was the first horse to win the New Zealand, Canterbury and G. G. Stead Gold Cups at the same meeting, and it is evident that he merely needs to train on satisfactorily in the future to win a fortune in stakes for his new owner. He has shown he can sprint, Jun out middle distances, and stay, snd such qualifications may carry him a long way in Australia. It is unlikely he will be required to race till the autumn, but his meeting with Nightmarch at Randwick will provide bn© of the greatest battles of the year.
Southern sportsmen consider there is little between these two brilliant performers, but it is significant that Some judges prefer Nightmarch to the Paladin gelding up to 10 furlongs. Beyond that distance there is a marked preference for Chide, and Mr. Aynsley may be right in saying that if Chide can beat Nightmarch over a mile or 10 furlongs he will also beat him over longer distances, for he is a wonderful stayer.
