“SUN” SERVICE STATION

rpiiE ‘‘Motordom** section or 'rite Sun includes in Us service to readers a -*• Queries and Answers Department, the object of which is to give accurate information regarding: mechanical and touring subjects. Whatever the particular puzzle may be in either diagnosing irritating troubles or motoring information of any bind, '‘Headlight’' will endeavour to help, or refer the point to. men who are recognised automobile experts in their respective lines. All communications must be accompanied by the Inquirer's name and address (not for publication), and sent to TIIE SUN “Service Station, Alotordom.” THE SUN. Auckland . Answers will appear weekly in this column.

“T.” — l have a light American car that is comparatively new (4,000 miles). Occasionally on a long hill the gear lever slips out of second gear. Could you please tell if the selector on second gear is likely to be faulty, and if so would it entail work to repair. If it is only the second gear that slips it is not the spring, but the selector, and if it slips out only “occasionally on long hills,” there is nothing very much wrong. Better have it attended to next time there is work done on the gearbox or clutch. M.A. —Could you tell me what makes a noise in the diff. of my 1927 Buick — a sort of grinding noise. * sj* * It is quite possible that a noise in the rear axle could be caused by the crown wheel fitting pinion too tightly; this would be a question of adjustment. It would be unreasonable to suppose that if this new crown wheel had been fitted recently, that the proper adjustment was not made at the time. It may be that a new crown wheel has been fitted to an old and worn pinion; this would always be more or less noisy. You should have an expert’s opinion, which could be given only on examination of the parts.

“Owner.” —-My little Singer has been using a. lot of oil recently although I have tried using heavier oil, also fitting new. wide rings. The car has done over 30,000 miles.

It appears that your cylinder walls are worn or scored, allowing - oil to pass, and even if new rings were fitted they would not be able to remedy the trouble. Again, a wide ring is not as flexible as a harrow, and the new rings put in may be helping the trouble by not being a proper fit in the grooves, j See if the new rings have a polished surface, or are patchy. If the latter is the case, a regrind and a new piston is probably the solution to the difficulty. M.J.G.—I wan’t some advice about the clutch of my Morris car, which needs relining I think, as it slips so easily, although I have thrown in lots of kerosene, whidfi I heard was very good for it. * * * The necessity’ of relining a Morris clutch is extremely rare, and your trouble is more likely to be either in the clutch withdrawal race having come loose through the slacking off of the screwed lock ring, or the withdrawal forks are badly worn, caused by the ball race revolving as a solid ! instead of against the balls. To re- j move clutch: Disconnect ball joint at! rear.of gear-box, remove shackle bolts from rear springs and disconnect brake t rods. Withdraw rear axle complete j about one foot.* Remove lid of gear- j box and release clutch springs (special j tood required). Remove bolts holding J gear-box to engine, when whole unit can be withdrawn. In reassembling care should be taken to keep clutch i plates in a forward position.
