Reports were received stating that « alarming amount of drinking goes „ n m the lounges of the large city lotels. £ case was cited of a girl who columned several cocktails, and when s He attempted to rise from her seat, ,j,e fell to the floor helplessly drunk. Another Instance was quoted of two toung women, accompanied by male friends. They drank champagne until (So women were unable to walk without the assistance of their male comjanions, who led them from the lounge. It was declared that these were not by any means isolated instances, young women did not confine themMlres to drinking wines of light alcoholic content, but freely ordered vhisky and cocktails, many becoming intoxicated. It was decided to urge the police to exercise a more strict supervision of drinking in hotel lounges, and to axk the Licensing Committee to discourage special provision being made for the supply of liquor to women. Several hotels were mentioned in this connection. The sale of rum-flavoured sweets in Auckland was also discussed. A »»eetu-maker stated that he had preriously made lollies with rum and butter The sale of these had been •topped, but similar sweets made in England were now being sold in Aucklind. It was claimed that these lollies were strongly flavoured with rum and would create a taste for this liquor. Members of the union expressed strong objection to such sweets being sold to young people, »nd decided to urge confectioners to discontinue their sale, and to request the authorities to ban their importation.
