FIRE DAMAGES SCHOOL
| CHRISTCHURCH OUTBREAK INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED From Our Own Correspondent CHRISTCHURCH, Today. A mysterious fire broke out in the manual training block at the Sydenham School early yesterday morning. Before it was suppressed it had done £2OO worth of damage A policeman saw the flames through a window about 2.30 a.m. He gave the alarm and then broke into the building discovering that the landing outside the domestic science room was hurning fiercely. The firemen had a difficult fight, but succeeded in confining the flames to the landing. Damage was done to the walls and roof and to several cupboards containing books and uniforms belonging to teachers. The building was locked up by the caretaker at 5 p.m. on the previous day, and as there was no inflammable material near and as neither gas nor electric light was laid on, it is difficult to account for the outbreak. It is possible for an outsider to enter the building, and it is thought that the fire was started deliberately. Yesterday all classes in the building were suspended. The damage to the landing is covered by the Education Department’s general policy, and there was a cover of £SO dn the teachers’ property.
