FALL OF BRICKS
WALL AT OTAHUHU COLLAPSES TOPPLED QUIETLY OVER Thousands of bricks quietly toppled into a heap at Otahuhu early- this morning. They had been carefully built up by the contractors in a double wall 16ft high and 30ft long. Contractors were erecting a building on the Great South Road near the war memorial. The scaffolding was removed yesterday and the wall was standing at midnight. This morning, however, the northern wall of the building, down to the foundations, was lying iu a heap. The continuous wet weather is said to have been the cause of the collapse. An examination of the fallen bricks showed that the mortar was still wet. That on the southern wall of the building was dry. Today the words “Waitemata Brewery” are being fixed in huge letters to a building not far from the collapsed wall. Next week, it is stated, business there will begin in earnest.
