ASSISTING SETTLERS

LACK OF INFORMATION DELEGATES TO MEET MINISTER The necessity of providing facilities for the supplying of information to intending settlers was emphasised at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League yesterday. Mr. W. J. Holdsworth presided. It was felt that New Zealand was under a disadvantage, as other Dominions, especially Canada and Western Australia, by reason of more extensive propaganda activities, were attracting many migrants who would otherwise come to New Zealand. The attention of people overseas is directed to New Zealand, but there is no authority available when they come here. For lack of definite policy, the Lands Department is unable to supply the necessary data. It was considered by the executive that a booklet, as proposed at a previous meeting, would meet all needs, but it was doubtful if it would pay its way. It was suggested that a leaflet setting out the league’s objects might be issued at a small cost. It was finally decided to hold the matter over for further consideration.

A proposal that a delegation should meet the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, at the close of the session, met with approval, it being suggested that the delegation should include representatives of all bodies interested in the settlement and development of land.
