FASCINATING ADDRESS WOMEN OF EAST AND WEST The monthly meeting of the Mothers’ Thought Guild was held recently at the residence of Mrs. Hemus, Belvedere Street, Epsom. After a few introductory remarks had been made on the aims and ideals of the guild by Mrs. Plemus, Mrs. Dyson, of Java, gave a most interesting talk on many matters concerning the life of women both In the Eastern and the Western worlds. She spoke a.t some length on the fast-increasing population of the coloured races, drawing attention to the great necessity of finding outlets for the masses. Coupled with the speaker’s choice of interesting topics, her charming personality delighted her listeners, so that the time spent with her passed all too quickly. SUCCESSFUL CONCERT MANGERE ENTERTAINMENT The funds of the Mangere East annual bazaar and Christmas tree will receive a considerable fillip as the result of a very enjoyable concert held in the Mangere East Public Hall on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of members of the church and their friends, who enjoyed the programme of musical items contributed by Miss Harrison’s concert and dramatic party. The function was held under Uie auspices of the Mangere East Ladies’ Guild. THAMES DANCE RUGBY UNION FUNCTION THAMES, Today. Under the auspices of the Thames Rugby Union a weekly dance has been held for. several months, and as a windup to these functions an extended evening was held on Thursday. The dance was well patronised, and visitors from all round the district were present. During the course of the evening the president of the union presented th'e cups won during the season. The Physical Training Club won the three cups competed* for, that is, the Stewart Memorial Cup, White Shield, and Knockout Cup. In the junior grade, Physical Training was also successful, and College Old Boys annexed the third grade cup. Messrs. M. Phillips, S. McDonald and C. Dufty accepted the trophies on behalf of the respective teams. In recognition of the generous, service rendered to football by Mesdames F. Hayward and C. Rockley, who have had charge and were mainfy responsible for the organisation of the various functions to augment the funds of the union, which is making strenuous efforts to have a perfect playing area at Rhodes Park, the chairman of the Rugby Union, Mr. W. Arbury, presented both women with a handsome piece of Doulton ware. The action of the union was received with rounds of applause. AN ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Mavis Winifred, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold S. Turner, Awa Street, Otahuhu, to Ambrose Leo, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle, of Mangere Road, Otahuhu.
