WET-SUNDAY TASK
SPRING-CLEANING, THE HOUSEWIFE’S BOGY FATHER RISES EARLY One bogy of the housewife’s year is nearly over. Spring to some, brings whisperings of love and the poetic urge, but to her it brings that most prosaic of tasks spring cleaning. 'fT'IS a time of topsy-turvey. when the whole house is upside-down, and when father's nerves are inclined to become frayed when everything seems to go amissing. Some housewives make a rush at the task and get it over in October, others even a month earlier. But for most it is a November task, and eventually the services of the whole family are enlisted. * Father, never willing to give up a Saturday afternoon’s bowls, is stirred out of bed at an unusually early hour on Sunday morning, and soon finds himself tangled in cob-webs and perspiring at the end of a broom, or on top of a ladder. But after all, it is not by any means
the worst type of occupation for a Sunday morning in the weather that has become proverbial In Auckland. Big brother has to busy himself with the paint pot and brush, and even sister finds recreation after a week at the typewriter, by turning
out musty drawers and performing sundry other menial tasks. In these days of science and invention the annual task of spring-cleaning is not as severe as it used to be, before vacuum cleaners had come along to relieve father of many weary hours beating carpets in the back yard. But it is still a task which every housewife is glad to see over, and unless there is a big change in the weather during the next twelve hours, tomorrow should be a most profitable occasion for having another go at it. There is little likelihood of many lunch baskets being packed in Auckland tomorrow, and the beaches which have come into popularity on recent week-ends, after the close of winter, I will be practically deserted again.
