ROXY AND EMPRESS

TWO TALKIES The sea is an evergreen setting for stories of adventure and romance and it is appropriately used in “Sal of Singapore,” the principal talking feature on the double-feature programme now being presented continuously at the Roxy Theatre, Queen Street, and at the Empress Theatre, Newton. Fred Kohler and Phyllis Haver play the leading roles, and the notable supporting cast includes Noble Johnson, Luke Carles, Dan Wolheim and Pat Harmon. Kohler appears as the lawless and domineering master of a small cargo ship. Miss Haver plays the part of a iiotorious cabaret dancer in a Mexican port. Kohler is attracted by her beauty and kidnaps the girl, taking her on his boat to Singapore. How the two fall in love is told in a series of interesting incidents. “Show Folks,” an interesting story of the lives of itinerant vaudeville artists, is the second picture on the programme. The mutual love of Eddie Quillan and Lina Basquette, who are cast as dancers in a vaudeville company, forms the theme of the film. A variety of shorter talking and singing features completes a wellbalanced programme.
