Fine Christmas Card
AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB t Attracting Real Speed Merchants THE schedule for the Auckland Trottiug Club’s summer •* carnival, which comes up for presentation on December -7, 28 and 31, is now claiming the attention of owners and trainers. Those directly interested should note that entries tor all events are due on Friday, November 22, the day preceding the Otahuhu Club’s final, day at Epsom.
The schedule has been framed in a most attractive light, and while the club found it imperative, owing: to financial stress, to clip the prize money, the .stakes offering - for the December carnival are still assessed on quite a liberal scale.
The Auckland Christmas fixture ranks second only to that of the Metropolitan November Cup carnival both for importance and popularity and the high-class contests carded demonstrate the splendid progress made in the light harness pastime in this province, and by the club during its years of activity. The best of the Dominion’s pacers and trotters are well catered for. classes being arranged to suit the highest grade speed merchants. Then again several well-endowed items appear, which are an encouragement to horses qualifying for the highest position in the New Zealand light harness arena, while the improving section, the first stage of advancement, are given excellent opportunities to gain their proficiency. The Big Heats AsT usual, the chief event on the brightly-coloured card is the Auckland Cup, which, is endowed to the extent of £1,650, to which is added a hundred guinea gold cup. "With its attractive limit of 4.28 the best cup class contestants in the land will be available and the public can see practically another New Zealand Cup event repeated. The popular Champion Handicap of £ 600 for the real speedsters who can tramp the 10 furlongs at a 2.11 mile gait is again included, while the Summer Cup and President’s, both run over two miles and worth £9OO, will also attract the king-pin horses. The Auckland club, with its laudable idea of fostering the square-gaited performer, has placed several attractive items on the schedule for those who favour this style of untrammelled locomotion, the chief of which is the Rowe Cup (so called as a tribute to President John Rowe), which constitutes one of the greatest events in the Dominion's light harness calendar. This race is endowed to the extent of £I,OOO. while a gold cup, valued at £IOO. is added for the successful competitor. With a 4.36 limit, the highest grade trotters of the country will be seen in action. Extra Attraction To give this year’s Christmas trotting festival additional tone, the Great Northern Derby, for the crack three-year-olds, will be staged, and the classic claims a purse of £I.OOO. The Derby is one of the greatest events of the year, and from its ranks come consistently the future handicap champions. The schedule in its attractiveness cannot fail to appeal to owners and trainers in all parts of the Dominion, and it is quite on the cards that
several of Australia’s best will make a trip across the Tasman for the carnival.
As already mentioned, entries for all events close on November 22 with Secretary A. G. Mabee, and on the same date a final payment of £lO in connection with the Derby, and a first payment of £2 for the 1930 Derby will be received. Handicaps for the opening day events will be declared on December 13, to make up their mind about accepting.
