AUCKLAND ART UNION

ALL TICKETS WERE IN USE OF DUPLICATE BUTTS When Mrs. E. Stone, of Pahiatua, won the first prize of £2,000 in the Aero Club’s Art Union, it was announced that she was fortunate to have forwarded the butt of the ticket direct to Auckland, as otherwise it may have been too late for the drawing. This statement through the Press has led the officials of the art union to explain that the returning of the duplicate butt had actually no influence on the participation of the ticket in the draw. The checking up showed that every ticket sold participated in the ballot and the duplicate butts were provided simply to give the purchaser a means of satisfying himself that the original butts had been returned. They served no useful purpose so far as the internal working of the art union was concerned. All checks and records kept by the officials were independent of the return of any or all of the duplicates. Indexed books were kept in which appeared the numbers of every book of tickets issue. When the ticket-book passed out of the organiser’s hands a mark was made in the record book and when the butts of the tickets were returned another entry was made. When duplicate butts were sent in the numbers were looked up in the record book and the original butts located. Toward the close of the art union a final round-up was made of people who were still holding books or bulls. A few butts were gathered in only at the eleventh hour, but the Aero Club officials succeeded in calling in all that had been issued.
