NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, reported at the meeting' of the North - cote Borough Council held last evening that at a special meeting of the joint standing committee of the Marine Boroughs’ Destructor the question of abating the nuisance caused by. smoke from the destructor had been thoroughly investigated. On the recommendation of Mr. Jacobs, engineer to the Auckland Hospital Board, it had been decided to install an oil burner in the furnace. This, in his opinion, would eliminate the. nuisance. As part-owners, any alterations would have to be paid for by the council on the basis of its proportion of the capital cost. The council decided to sanction the proposed alteration. Cr. F. Wilson, while agreeing with the present proposal, was of the opinion that liability for any further expenditure should be clearly defined. He moved, “That the chairman of the Legal and Finance Committee be requested to furnish legal opinion as to the council’s liability for any further capital expenditure, incurred or to be incurred, in connection with destructor capital costs, and also what provision Is made under the requisition for tine incurring of such additional expenditure.” The motion was carried. It was decided that the observance of Armistice Day in the borough should be on the same lines as those of previous years.

Permission was granted for pictures to be shown at the local theatre on Christmas Night.

The Birkenhead and Xorthcote Rugby Union Club wrote asking for a sit© on the reserve for the purpose of erecting a gymnasium and trainingshed. Subject to the consent of the Birkenhead Borough Council, the request was granted.
