MYSTERY THRILLER AT EPSOM

“A Tliief in the Dark,” now at the Regent Theatre, Epsom, is of the spooks and house-of-mystery school, with hilarious situations, and exposes at least one method of conducting a fake spiritualistic seance. The story depicts attempts of a mob of circus side-show grafters to steal a fortune in jewels from an eccentric old recluse, and his pretty granddaughter. This takes place in the house of mystery, the recluse’s old southern mansion, at midnight, during a heavy electrical storm. A seance in spiritualism serves to introduce sliding panels, “ghosts,” secret passageways. and finally the climax of the picture. Spine-chilling effects and the supernovelties of the production will not. of course, be .revealed here, out of deference to the surprise effect of the photo-play. An exciting underworld story, “The Voice of the City,” is the second big attraction.
