Whangarei Contests Will Be Full of Interest

Prospects for Tomorrow

The spring fixture of the Whangarei j Racing Club opens at Whangarei to- j morrow and will be concluded on Sat- j urday. The meeting holds out every j inducement of being a splendid sue- | cess. “Early Bird’s” review of the j : fields is given below: J The spring fixture at the Northern j convincing ground is very popular with Auckland sportsmen. Good fields will be seen in action, a dearth of runners in the open sprint being the only ! drawback on an otherwise line card. ! The maiden platers will have first say in the Spring Plate There are some very speedy sorts engaged here, and it makes the field a bit better than the average seen out in this class. Speed merchants are Crimestor and Norval Tea, and likely improvers are Measurer, Tetro rchatv (who has been doing good track work), Tukunoa, Valorient, Lady Eustace, Land Measure, Section, Snowplane, Valquette and Wild Country. It should be quite a good pool, with this pair at the head of the quotations: NORVAL TEA CRIMESTOR Kensington Hack Handicap Some of the possibilities are en-

gaged later on in the day. Eombarder has been doing excellently in his work at headquarters, and Red Lion, to.o, has done everything asked of him. His turn may not be far off. Patytahi won races at Gisborne, and Idem will be a nuisance if he can foot it with the leaders on this turning course. Pellette is speedy, and so too is Roman Pearl. Big Bertha and Mauriaena are distinct possibilities, and of those further down the chances of Haviland and Diamond Queen appeal most. Best backed will be RED LION BOMBARDER CARL IDEM Huanui Hack Hurdles The 10 acceptors should furnish quite an interesting contest. Golden Wedding rather stands out, for she is in tip-top order and is a good jumper, feerang will be making his debut over the sticks and is a likely sort. Sleepy Sol has not had many chances to fill his early promise. Sea Comet -can jump and is well seasoned, while interesting novices are Night Comet (who showed promise at Cambridge.), Mountain Guide and Automne. Favourites will probably be GOLDEN WEDDING SLEEPY SOL Whangarei Gold Cup This field is a good one and a bit

stronger than usually seen out. Delightment will be at long odds if he sees the post. High PiT i'ii raced C*l at Avondale and Ellerslie, but raced badlt* in the big race av Cambridge lust week, never appearing on the scene till it was too late. Perhaps that form can be overlooked. Le Choucas ran second to Eager Rose at j his last start, and as he likes this 1 course he may be one of the hard ones. : Transformer may, and again may not. be caught right. Maori 801 is a fancied light-weight, and so too is King Emerald, who has been working well. Wendav failed bad]} | at Cambridge, and Sir Archie is back ; on the flat again: probably his lew races over the sticks will have done him good. Thursby and Palmares , are not without chances, for DOtn I finish well. Liaison ran a better race ; at Cambridge than generally given credit for, and she may be the pick of those on the minimum. It is a , hard race to sum up, but this pair will at least come in for pronounced backin&* HIGH PITCH LE CHOUCAS County Handicap Confined to horses that have been trained in the district for a certain npvinfi is known about the condi-

period, little is known a pout me conuition of those engaged. Right apd Left, Welcome Home. Sunny Morn, Light wood, Kildeer, Blue Bonnet. Furore and Cynique all have pace, and of this octet the favourites may be SUNNY MORN LIGHT WOOD Hikurangi Hack Handicap It is not often that a horse lhat has run third in the Avondale Guineas figures in this race a few weeks after the classic, but Imperial Prince is the exception. His form then was good enough for this class surely. Bombarder and Red Lion must be fancied, especially if they miss their first engagement. Gay Cockade gave the hot odds-on favourite, Refresher, a hard race at Ellerslie, and on that showing may be the goods. Roman .Pearl and Brampton are fancied to a certain extent, and of those at the bottom Diamond Queen and Royal Seagull are preferred. Best backed may be IMPERIAL PRINCE GAY COCKADE Manaia Handicap Probably the half-dozen acceptors will see the post and thus ensure for the careful punters a second dividend. Lady’s Boy is now up in the handicaps, but he is a good sort and can carry the weight. Oration is in nicely in this field, and The Begum Trill only need to improve a little on Cambridge running (where she was a good fourth) to lead them a merry dance. Cymon may be a good three-year-old sprinter, and Macroom and Envoy complete the field. Small field and all that ! it is, it will be an interesting contest, ! with marked honours favouring THE BEGUM LADY’S BOY Parahaki Handicap Some of these horses are engaged earlier, and in the case of two, Maori

Boy and Liaison, they would stand royal chances if reserved for this, parv ticularly the latter. Ti Tree, Hipo, Owairaka, Thursby, Cynthia N. and _• the improving Gem light. If started I here Liaison would be preferred, but t in her absence there will be no lack , of backing for ’ Ti TREE 1 GEMLIGHT ’’ The following are some of tomor--13 row’s RIDING ENGAGEMENTS L.
