PRAISE FOR REED

Late Turf

CHEERED BY 140,000 MELBOURNE CUP TRIUMPH Reed. 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The “Sydney Morning Herald,” commenting on the Melbourne Cup, says the race was a veritable triumph for New Zealand, the placed horses being bred in the Dominion. There were remarkable scenes of enthusiasm from the 140,000 who witnessed the race from the time Nightmarch passed Phar Lap in the straight until his rider dismounted after a most convincing victory. Phar Lap practically beat himself. The pace was so slow early that his rider found it impossible to restrain him, and Phar Lap pulled himself to the front much too soon. He was fighting for his head from the outset. Paquito made a wonderful run to secure second place. He was not prominent until the last three furlongs were entered upon. Taking control at the distance, Nightmarcli cleared right away, and won in convincing manner, placing him on the same high rung of the ladder as Windbag.

His win was a complete vindication of the horsemanship of the New Zealander, Roy Reed.

The importance of the event did not affect Reed in the slightest. He kept his mount going remarkably. High Syce ran a good race, and was not disgraced with his heavy weight. Some Quality was doing best at the finish. Taisho was tired, and Winalot beat only two horses home. The “Telegraph” says Nightmarch has proved himself one of the best horses that as ever left New Zealand. This is saying a great deal, because Carbine and Limerick are among this company. Phar Lap was beaten, but npt disgraced. The battle between horse and rider could scarcely have been helpful to the Derby winner. Paquito is returning to New Zealand on Friday. Phar Lap cantered at Caulfield today. He looks well. Nightmarch’s stake winnings total £21,384. WORK AT RICCARTON Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Work at Riccarton this morning was not exciting, most horses doing easy tasks. J. T. Jamieson worked In the Shade and others of his team on the trial grass, where B. Burgess also sent Atholspear, Spearmiss and Austerity, but their tasks were not serious. Silver Paper ran five furlongs in I. 3-5, Aspiring equalling that performance. Gala Day and Aberfeldy jumped four hurdles well, and Oriflamb, Pangolin and Ueisler did the same separately. After Ten was better than Toomvara over four hurdles. The previous day’s arrivals; including Seatown, Yoma, Historic, Concentrate and Cimabue, did useful pace work. Kapuna, Francolin, Tembroney, Solmar, Nine of Spades, Danthonia, Lord Middleton and Lady Mid. overnight arrivals, did light tasks. Tcheka arrived from the North this morning. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT J. Kerepeehi.—Eaglet was scratched for the W.R.C. Shorts Handicap at 2.15 p.m. on Friday, the day before the race.
