Pahiatua Widow is Winner of £2,000
AERO CLUB ART UNION AUCKLANDERS ARE UNLUCKY Mrs. E. Stone, of Pahiatua, will be a liappy woman today. Yesterday she won £2,000 first prize in the Auckland Aero Club art union. The drawing of the art union took place before a large and interested audience at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. Aucklanders were unlucky, most of the big prizes going outside of the City. The five-figure system was used in the running of the art union, and volunteers were called from the audience, one for each figure, and one for the index letter. The police and the Department of Internal Affairs exercised supervision. Following were the winners of the principal prizes: Mrs. E. Stone, Pahiatua, £2,000. Miss Eva McLaehlan, Gisborne, £SOO. Mr. W. Clever, Ruakaka, £250. The four prizes of £ 100 went to Miss G. Hungerford, Petrie Street, Christchurch; A. D. Boulton, Curran Street, Ponsonby; J. Anderson, Ikamatua, West Coast, and L. C. Fowler, Blenheim. One of the four prizes of £SO went to a resident of Remuera. Prizes of £25. £lO and £5 brought the total to 105 prizes. The actual drawing took two and three-quarter hours, and the marble representing the first prize was not drawn until only a half-dozen prizes remained in the box. Each of the volunteers had a bag of numbers running from 0 to 9, and the ticket numbers ran from 21,000 to 99,999, in series from A and F. Numbers from 1 to 105 were placed in the ballot-box, the draw being operated by an index-letter being drawn from the bag and followed by five figures each drawn by one of the volunteers. The prize was then allotted to the number by drawing from the ballotbox. The ticket number of the winner of the £2,000 prize was A 88,904, and was the only one in the book held by Mrs. Stone. Some thousands of pounds* surplus is expected after all organising expenses and prizes are paid for, and the money will be used for the development of an airdrome near Auckland, in addition to further equipment for the Auckland Aero Club. The numbers receiving £SO prizes were:—A63377, C 89635, A 36490, and D 25275. The £25 prizes were drawn by the following:—C3l634, F 58067, F 36619 and F 80797.
