FOR REGATTAS

OARSMEN SEEK WHAU PROPERTY ASSOCIATION MEETING Opposition to the suggestion that the association issue debentures to permit of the purchasing of a property on the banks of the Whau was expressed by the treasurer. Mr. A. M. Wilson, when the 42nd annual meeting of the Auckland Rowing Association was held last evening. Mr. John Clark, patron, presided. Mr. J. K. Hunn (University) had urged the incoming committee to consider the early acquisition of a site on the Whau bank for regatta purposes. The expanse would be a drain on the association’s purse for a few years, but it would not be long before there was a good return on the money spent. The delegate suggested the issue of debentures to obtain tho necessary money. Mr. Wilson was not in favour of the debenture scheme, reminding delegates that there would be interest to be paid. It should be possible to wipe off the debt of £6OO or so with one combined effort. Mr. Wilson could not agree that the land would bring in a return, as suggested by Mr. Hunn. It was not a part of the rich Avondale flats and was of little use for agriculture. In any case, the present owners of the property need not sell the land unless they wished. The late owner had said that, if the land were sold at all, he would like it to go to the rowing association. It was further mentioned that the association was waiting for a report from the advisory of the estate. The annual meeting earlier, before the meeting of the New Zealand Council, was also left for the incoming committee to consider. Mr. V. St. George (Hamilton) thanked the association for the consideration given the Waikato Club last season. After eulogistic remarks regarding his services, Mr. G. H. Reston was made a life member of the association,. Mr. Clark congratulated the delegates on the fact that no item in the report and balance-sheet had been questioned or even commented upon unfavourably. “It is the greatest compliment you could pay your working officers,” he said. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr. J. Clark; vicepatron, Mr. J. Lovett; president, Mr. W. G. Mason; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. H. Reston, W. Madden, W. Oliver and C. C. Cairns; hon. secretary, Mr. E. IT. Buckler; hon. treasurer, Mr. A. M. Wilson; executive, Messrs. N. C. Cossey, R. Pooley, T. M. V. Morton, C. H. Hunt, A. M. Mackay, A. Ross, V. Dunne, A. Coutts; country member, Mr. A. C. Norden; delegates to New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, Messrs. B. R. Menzies and R. Innes; hon. auditor, Mr. J. Gulliver.
