“TRANSPORT SIX”
THOSE RESIGNATIONS CR. CAMPBELL REPLIES A reply has come from Cr. G. Grey Campbell to Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairVnan of the Transport Board, who yesterday criticised the councillor about his proposal that the “Transport Six” should resign following the board’s policy of increased tramway concession card prices. Cr. Grey Campbell says:—“The chairman of the board says he has nothing to say to my proposed motion, but considers that I should be the last person to propose the resignations in view of my association with the buses. Why? The saying that people living in glass houses should not throw stones is certainly not applicable to me. “One can readily understand his not being able to say anything in reply to the motion, but it is more difficult to understand his comment. One would think that because of my knowledge of transport I should be one of the first to speak, and it is my duty to do so in the public interest. “I remind Mr. Allum that I was elected to the City Council because I had appealed to the electors on the ground of my knowledge of transport,” Cr. Grey Campbell continues. “I would further point out to Mr. Allum this fact: that I hold my position on the council by the will of the people, a position which he cannot lay claim to. Mr. Allum says that constructive criticism is needed. Might I ask Mr. Allum what chance there was of this when the tickets at the increased rate were actually being printed before the board had considered or approved of the increase!”
