FROST DESTROYS FRUIT

SEASON’S CROP WIPED OUT IN CANTERBURY HUGE LOSSES ANTICIPATED (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. So serious was the frost iu Canterbury on Thursday night that orchardists consider that the stone fruit yield has been practically wiped out. It is the worst blow the industry in the district has suffered for many years and individual losses will be heavy. Many orders for cases have been cancelled, one grower alone deciding not to take delivery of 30,000 cases ordered. Canterbury’s share of the Dominion's growing export trade has been wiped out for the coming season. Last year's output 'of fruit from commercial orchards at Loburn and Rangiora was well up to 70,000 cases, and this year 10,000 cases of apples had been guaranteed by. the Rangiora and Loburn Fruitgrowers’ Association for export. Now it is expected that there will not be a case available for the overseas trade.
