President Rowe’s Trotting Record

ABLE ADMINISTRATOR ! LOVE FOR SQUARE-GAITERS After twenty-five years’ fine service in the interest of the sport he loves so well and the club over which he presides, Mr. John Rowe ; will again be in his accustomed place at the opening of the new season to extend the hand of welcome to patrons. Mr. Howe has watched tlie Aucklani Trotting Club grow from a small banc of enthusiastic trotting fans to a largi organisation, and he lias also played c prominent part in its advancement For the greater period of his fine reigr as head of tlie club, the president was closely associated with the late Mr. C F. Mark, who held the 'onerous posi-

tion of secretary from the inception of the trotting body, and they made a splendid combination for the progress of the club and the sport. Mr. Rowe’s interest in the growth of trotting has not been confined to the Auckland Province, and he holds ajengthy record of good service as a member of the New Zealand Trotting Conference; apd like many other light-harness enthusiasts, has been instrumental in raising the standard of tlie pastime to a high degree. For some thirteen years he was premier of the light-harness parliament and at the present time is vicepresident of the conference. Likes the Trotter The Auckland president’s long suit is the square-gaited horse, and he has always been a staunch advocate for better conditions for trotters. His persistent efforts in this respect have borne good fruit and as a tribute to his work in this direction, tlie Auckland Club instituted a high-class event for the pure gaiters, naming it the Rowe Cup. This heat is one of the best of its kind in the Dominion, and is staged at the club’s Christmas carnival. At the annual general meeting of the Auckland Club in August, many fine bouquets were thrown at the president on attaining his silver jubilee/ and liis popularity was disclosed by the unanimity of the wish expressed that lie would long remain in the chief position which lie had for twenty-five years filled with credit to himself and the club.
