WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP KEEN PLAY IN SEMI-FINALS Two Southern champions went down in the semi-finals of the Auckland provincial women s golf championships at Aliddlcmore yesterday. By defeating Aliss AI. Guy, of Palmerston North, and Aliss D. Chrystall, of Christchurch, respectively. Airs. R. L. AVllson, of Titirangi, and Aliss E. Culling, of Aliddlcmore, made it an Auckland final. Yesterday provided a stern test, even for adaptable players. Heavy rain held up tho second round oX match play in the morning, and when the first two players went out at 10 o’clock, a steady drizzle and a cold wind foreshadowed 'anything but favourable conditions for the day’s play. The weather did improve somewhat in th«; afternoon, but it was hard going all the way, and under the circumstances the standard of golf was excellent. MRS. STEW ART BEATEN The chief feature of the morning’s play was the defeat of last year’s i champion. Airs. I. B. Stewart, of Titirangi. by Aliss E. Culling, of Middlemore. Airs. Stewart did not start too well, she was three down at the turn, and was eventually beaten 4 and 3. Miss Culling followed this up by defeating a formidable Southern invader. Aliss D. Chrystall. of Christchurch, in the semi-finals, after a splendid contest, which went to the last gre*>n before Aliss Culling holed a long putt, and won the match one up. Airs. R. L. Wilson, of Titirangi. who played soundly and consistently throughout, was too good for Miss AT. Guy, of Palmerston North. Airs. Wilson started scratchily, but she quickly ran into her best form, and despite a hard fight by Aliss Guy to mak" up tile leeway in the middle stages, tho Titirangi ! player won 4 up and 3 to play.
