ANOTHER TITLE BOUT

EKLUND WILL DEFEND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VANCE GUARANTEES £4OO The light-heavy-weight champion- j ship uf the world will be in dispute on j October 21, when “Farmer” Vance will | again try conclusions with Clarence 1 Eklund. holder of the title. Eklund retained his title against j Vance in a match at the Town Hall j last Monday. Vance appeared likely to j win when he became excited and threw , his chance away. He was so disgusted with himself, and was so sure that he j could win if given an opportunity, that he asked the New Zealand Wrestling Association to match him again. The association was agreeable, but Eklund asked for a guarantee of £4OO, win, lose or draw, if he was to defend his title. The champion was quite within his rights, for the title is worth a lot of money and if he defended it in America he would draw more than the equal of £ 400. The association could not see its way j clear to guarantee the money and asked ] Vance what he would do. Vance said j that Eklund could take the whole of j the gate to which he would add £SO j out of his own pocket. This was not | agreeable to Eklund, who remained j firm to his request for £4OO. Vance was keen to get another j chance and he undertook to guarantee Eklund £4OO to defend his title in the j Town Hall on October 21. This morn- j ing the question was settled and the j articles signed. Vance has deposited £SO with the j New Zealand Wrestling Association and has to pay a further £ 350 by three p.m. Monday. Eklund has deposited £IOO with the association as a guarantee that he will defend his title. The match committee of the association has recommended to the executive that the association forgo its percentage of the gate for this contest, but that part of the question will not affect the match. Thus Aucklanders will be able to see another world’s championship contest and. although the same men are engaged as in the previous title bout, those who saw that match will be keen to go again. WELLINGTON MATCH JOHANSSON V. GARDINI As “Farmer” Vance will be wrestling in Auckland on October 21, he will not oppose Johansson in Wellington on Wednesday and liis place haS been filled by Gardini.
