HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE

BOARD’S THREAT TO COUNCIL WAITOMO COUNTY ROADS From Our Oxen Correspondent TE KUITI, Today. Unless steps are taken by the Waitomo County Council to maintain and improve the condition of the highway between Pio Pio and Te Kuiti before the end of the month, the Main Highways Board will take over the maintenance of the highway. It will also require the council to pay one-third of the cost, of maintenance, and will revoke its delegation to the council. Advice to this effect was received at the Waitomo County Council’s meeting. A letter in a similar strain was also received from the district .enengineer regarding the Te Kuiti eightmile road. Road maintenance was discussed by the councillors for hours, and it was finally decided that the engineer should confer with the district engineer at Taumarunui and then spend the £3OO free money from the board and £4lO on the £2 for £1 basis, on the main highway from Te Kuiti to the eight-mile peg. The question of improvements to the Pio PioMahoenui end was left in the hands of a sub-committee comprising Crs. Wilson, Old and Neal. It was also decided to pay, under protest, the board’s claim for £llO, being the first quarter’s contribution toward the maintenance of the Te Kuiti-Bulls Road.
