FLAT TRAM RATE
MT. ROSKILL SUGGESTION LEVY FEARED Perturbed by the possibility of a special rate being struck by the Transin rt Board to make good its losses, the .Mount Roskill Road Board, at its meeting last evening, advocated that a threepenny flat rate be first given a trial. The chairma*, Mr. E. F. Jones, said that the suggestion of a flat rate had ;lI ready been before the Transport Board, and he had been advised that it was being favourably considered -by members. “If we could get a flat rate of threepence.” he said, “the Roskill district would go ahead by leaps and bounds, and would never look back.” Other members mentioned several cities in America that had adopted the system and averred that it had paid ■ andsomely, especially in thickiy-popu-iated areas. In moving that the Transport Board be urged to give the system a trial, Mr. Jones alluded to the losses being made on the tramways, and feared that !f things went on as they were going, t was only a question of time when the •atepayers in the Metropolitan Transport Area would bo called upon for a levy. The motion was carried unanimously.
