AT ST. JAMES ON FRIDAY R io port of adventure and romance; Rita, a laughing mouth, a flying smile, a sons set to Spanish music. That is "Rio Rita." the fascinating young lady, who is coming to the St. James Theatre on Friday. Gladys Moncrieff. of course, is the bright particular ruby round which the show revolves. Her voice has the same golden quality that thrilled New Zealand before she went to London. Now she is back her voice is more melodious than ever. Miss Moncneif has earned the title of a grand opera star singing in musical comedy. The rich settings of “Rio Rita.” the colours and the jewels, make a perfect setting for h °Clfief of the supporting beauties is Janette Gilmour, who dances as allu !'‘ ingly as slia acts and sings. Janexte GUmour’s dances are a type pecuhaily her own. With a whirling background of ballet girls behind her, and a setting of copper and turquoise, Miss Gilmour flashes across the stage in a blaze of colour. . Most of the rolling down to Rio is done by Gave Mallen, the comedian. His work is finely polished, and of the modern American stayle, as charactcristice as the frolics of Haroid Llov d Leslie Pearce supplies the fine tmtone notes of the romance and sin D s several duets with Miss Moncrieff. When the box plans J”/ ™ six nights and two matinees J the St. James on Monday and Tues dav mornings, there were long Queues of people waiting, and everything pro mises a long and successful Auckland season.
