Auckland R.C. Still Dominion’s Premier Club

The splendid start of the new raci g vear in the Auckland Province made I at Ellerslie last Saturday, on the oe- | casion of the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, augurs well for a season on the part cl those connected ! with the sport—and their number b ! legion, and probably repiesent a m« ijority of the adult population of tne past, the At.eUand Racing j Club is well to the tore vitb n-- ; schedules for the next season, uu V grammes for the ensuing meetings ! being most attractive to horse-owners ’ and racegoers. j For the 31 days’ racing this suison . the amount to be given in stake* [reaches £58,550 —an average cl ! £ 5,323 for each day. and an average iof £6£3 a race. This is a much more j valuable average stake than is offered „v anv other club in the Dominion, ami ; substantiates the claim of the A.R.C. to ;be an easy first of the racing bodies in i New Zealand. The Auckland Cup. as already stated, remains at £3.000. including a £IOO gold cup for the winning owner, and there are several Other races the stake for which reaches four figures or more. The “thousand pounders and over are as follow: AUCKLAND CUP £3.000 G.N. GUINEAS 1 - 500 MITCHELSON CUP I-? 50 WELCOME STAKES 1000 G.N. FOAL STAKES 1-350 RAILWAY HANDICAP 1-250 SUMMER CUP 1 - 000 A.R.C. HANDICAP 1-500 G.N. DERBY 3-000 GRANDSTAND HANDICAP 1.000 ROYAL STAKES 1-000 EASTER HANDICAP 1-500 G.N. CHAMPAGNE STAKES 1.000 AUTUMN HANDICAP 1-000 G.N. ST. LEGER 1.000 G.N. HURDLES .. 1.750 CORNWALL HANDICAP .. .. 1.000 G.N. STEEPLECHASE .. 2,000 WINTER STEEPLECHASE 1.000 There they are—l 9of them. Small wonder that the Auckland Racing Club always leads the way, when it can afford to offer such wonderful prize money. The Great Northern Derby ranks next only to the A.J.C. Derby and the V.R.C. Derby in the matter of stake money, while of course the Auckland Cup is one of the most important and valuable handicaps south of the Line. The Great Northern Steeplechase holds its place with its £2,000 stake, and the Great Northern Hurdles with £1,750 is a long way ahead of the stake money offered for any of the the small fences in the Dominion. A most pleasing feature of the list of “thousand pounders” and over is that, of the 19, no less than seven are for classic races. There are four races in midwinter endowed with big money, and as there are no classics decided at that meeting, it can be said that seven out of 15 are classic contests so richly endowed. This is indeed a pleasant aspect of the schedules of the A. R.C. for 1929-30. The first meeting to come under i notice is the spring fixture, to be decided at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday, October 5 and 7, and entries Cor which are due to close on Friday. September 13. forfeits for the Welcome Stakes and Great Northern Guineas being due at the same time. The principal handicap race on that card is the Mitehelson Cup, worth £1.250. one mile and a-half. It is a long jour- j ney for so early in the season, but j the horses likely to contest the stake j will have an opportunity to go a mile j and a-quarter a fortnight earlier, in j the Avondale Cup. That should be j an excellent medium for tuning up | the horses for the extra quarter of a mile. Then, of course, there is the j Wanganui meeting a week prior to j that at Avondale. The Great Northern Guineas will see - the crack two-year-olds of last season in action, and this early classic is one of the most important of the season. Even with so many juveniles away in Australia, their absence is not likely to be greatly missed, for there are sufficient good ones left in the country to make a great race of it. Then there is the Welcome Stakes, for two-year-olds. Backing these two classics are several good handicap races, which will tend to make the spring meeting of the A.R.C. one to be remembered. The following is a complete list of the programmes drawn up by the committee of the A.R.C. for the ensuing season:— SPRING MEETING First Day—October 5.
