TRAMWAY EXCAVATIONS
WORK STARTS ON MONDAY SUCCESSFUL TENDERERS The successful tenderers for both the Point Chevalier and Dominion Road tramway extension excavations are Messrs. Brierly and McLeod, of 37 King Edward Street, Mount Eden. A week ago it was announced that W. Stevenson and Son had secured the contract for the Point Chevalier route, but it was subsequently found that the firm’s tender was irregular, and both contracts now go to Brierly and McLeod. A start will be made on Monday with the excavations on the Point Chevalier route. Cutting the bed of the tracks in the middle of the road will be undertaken first, and it is probable the first operations will be carried out by a steam shovel at the foot of the slope near Western Springs, working up the hill to the point where the Great North Road joins Surrey Crescent. It is not known yet whether the Dominion Road excavations will be undertaken simultaneously with the work at Point Chevalier. The City Council has been notified, however, that the centre portion of both routes is to be taken up. TENTATIVE TRAM SECTIONS The sections proposed by the Transport Board on the two routes are as follow: Point Chevalier. —City to Pitt Street, SS chains, fare 2d; Pitt Street to Surrey Crescent, 116 chains, fare from the City, 3d; Surrey Crescent to the old Stone Jug, 97 chains, fare from the City, -Id; Stone Jug to Walker Road (past the Point Chevalier Hall), 7S chains, fare from the City, sd; Walker Road to the Point, 73 chains, fare from the City, Gd.
