1 £350,000 FOR ROADS
RECONSTRUCTION IN ’QUAKE AREA CHIMNEY FOR EACH HOME Press Association M ELLINGTON, Todav. Relief measures in the earth-quake-stricken area are being pushed on. It is estimated that £350,000 will be required for road reconstruction. Individual applications for relief close on August 31 with the Central Earthquake Committee, a meeting of which will be held shortly after thai date to consider the position in the light of the applications made. The sum of £2,000 has been aliocated for the replacing of at least one fireplace in each house in the Murchison and adjacent area. A sum of £5,000 is also being spent in that district under Public Works surveillance for the putting in of temporary tracks to enable farmers in the district to transport their supplies to the factory. Mr. G. C. Black. M.P. for Motueka, says a sum of approximately £350,000 will be required for the reconstruction of main highways and by-ways In the affected area. It is estimated that about 45 miles of road will require to be reconstructed and the greatest expenditure is anticipated in restoring road communication between Karamea and Westport, for which the probable sum required will be £120,000. The reconstruction of the Buller Gorge Road is expected to absorb another £IOO,OOO. The district engineers of the Public Works Department at Nelson and Greymouth are at present engaged in preparing a comprehensive estimate of the damage, and it is expected details will shortly be in the hands of the Central Relief Committee.
